From an EPFL Class Project to a Campus App: the PocketCampus Story

From an EPFL Class Project to a Campus App: the PocketCampus Story

2010: a Class Project at EPFL

Back in 2010, in a Software Development course taught by Prof. George Candea at EPFL, a group of 20 students were given a unique challenge. Unlike typical courses where small groups worked on separate assignments, the entire class joined forces to build one single, unified project. Nowadays, the course is called Software Entreprise and welcomed 200 students in 2025!

Starting With Student Interviews

To figure out what to build, we started by interviewing our fellow students across campus: What would actually make your daily life at EPFL easier?

The feedback made it obvious: students needed a central mobile app to navigate everyday campus routines. Remember, this was 2010, the early days of smartphones, so taking a user-research approach to build a campus app was completely novel.

Building it Like a Software Company

To build it, the class was organized into subteams with designated responsibilities, much like a real software company. We worked in weekly sprints, putting into practice the Agile methodologies that would become the industry norm.

The First Campus App Features

We focused on a core set of essentials:

  • Course schedule

  • Daily cafeteria menus

  • Interactive campus map

  • Metro schedule (at the time, the official public transport apps were quite poor, so this one really mattered)

From Live Demo to Android, iOS and Web

In December 2010, at the end of the semester, we presented a live demo of our working prototype in front of stakeholders from EPFL and industry leaders.

The response was overwhelming, and a core group of us couldn't let it go. We continued building through subsequent semester projects, launching our first public Android release in Fall 2011. So that iPhone users weren't left out, our co-founder Loïc Gardiol spent most of the spring and summer of 2012 developing the iOS version from scratch, launching in Fall 2012. A couple of years later, we introduced a desktop web version to serve students right from their laptops.

2013: The Official EPFL Campus App

In 2013, long before university IT departments had mobile apps on their radar, EPFL took a bold step: they trusted our student-led project and made PocketCampus the official EPFL campus app.

2016: From Student Project to Swiss Startup

By 2016, Loïc Gardiol and Amer Chamseddine co-founded PocketCampus as a Swiss startup to bring this experience to other universities and corporate hubs. Over the years, driven by what users and customers asked for and by our own ideas, those first features grew into much more:

  • Course materials (Moodle integration) & grades

  • Room bookings & live room occupancy tracking

  • Digital student/employee IDs, business cards & integrated e-wallets

  • News, events & real-time messaging with push notifications

Behind all of this are many technical integrations with existing legacy systems, and partnerships we’ve built across the sector.

PocketCampus Today

Fast forward to today:

  • Market leader in Switzerland for all-in-one campus apps, with a growing presence in France

  • 33 institutions served & 130,000+ monthly active users

  • 100% self-funded from day one, a milestone we are incredibly proud of

  • A dedicated team of 9 employees

It all started with 20 students collaborating on a single class assignment using weekly Agile sprints. Never underestimate where a university course project can lead.

PocketCampus Hits 100,000 Users Per Month

We’re excited to announce a major milestone: PocketCampus apps have passed the bar of 100,000 unique users in a month, with nearly 50,000 daily active users! This reflects the strong engagement and value PocketCampus provides.

With 9 new institutions having launched PocketCampus apps in the last 12 months, that is now 30 universities, schools, and enterprises that rely on PocketCampus for their internal strategy.

The HEP Vaud, HEAD Geneva, and HES-SO Master launch their PocketCampus apps!

Starting this fall semester, three new schools are joining the PocketCampus family: the Pedagogical School of Canton de Vaud (HEP Vaud), the Geneva School of Art and Design (HEAD), and HES-SO Master.

Thousands of students are thus discovering the new daily tool for their studies! Many are already sending very positive feedback just a couple days after the launch!

As 2022 is approaching its end, PocketCampus apps are deployed on more than 15 school and entreprise campuses, with multiple major projects planned for the coming months.

1 Million Documents Printed with PocketCampus at EPFL!

1 Million Documents Printed with PocketCampus at EPFL!

When we launched Mobile Printing at EPFL, late 2014, we did not expect the feature to be so popular. Since then, the PocketCampus solution has become the way to go for most EPFL students, used on a daily basis to print documents and primarily course material. Not surprisingly, printing using the app is way easier than printing from a traditional computer, as it requires zero configuration. Forget about setting up a printer, installing a driver, etc., printing is now mobile and one tap away.

On an average day, at EPFL, over 3,500 documents are printed using the PocketCampus app, however, today, we are excited to announce that we passed the bar of 1,000,000 documents printed on the move!

The PocketCampus solution is already deployed at various universities and companies, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Canon in order to bring our technology to many more campuses to come.

Swiss EdTech Collider: PocketCampus Joins the Adventure

Swiss EdTech Collider: PocketCampus Joins the Adventure

On April 27th, EPFL inaugurated its new incubator for startups: the Swiss EdTech Collider. The particularity of this space is its dedication to startups active in the field of Digital Education. Grouped together, entrepreneurs will be able to exchange ideas, resources, and experiences, while benefitting from great visibility and specialized coaching.

PocketCampus is very happy to be part of this adventure from the start, along with 30 other startups. Our mission being largely motivated by the digitalization and simplification of tools for students,, we are looking forward to what we will be able to learn from meeting other entrepreneurs in this field. Education is at the dawn of a large transformation, this is going to be fun!

The EPFL Open House App by PocketCampus

The EPFL Open House App by PocketCampus

The École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne opened its doors to the public on November 5th and 6th 2016. This major event brought together 35'000 people from all generations on the campus, coming to discover what scientific research offers to the society.

PocketCampus was happy to build a dedicated app for the visitors, grouping into one place all the useful information to make the most out of the event. Features include the full, searchable program of the event, and a detailed, interactive map of the campus.

While being a native app on iOS and Android, the PocketCampus technology allowed the organizers to update the structure and the content of the app in real time during the event. This dynamism, as well as the ease-of-use, design, and reliability of the app, were greatly appreciated.

EPFL Renews its Trust in PocketCampus for Four Years

EPFL Renews its Trust in PocketCampus for Four Years

One does not change a winning team!

Since its launch in 2013, PocketCampus has had a lot of success within the EPFL community. With more than 10'000 active users, half of which using it daily, the app has become the one-and-only mobile tool, helping the school's students, professors, and employees in their daily life.

The mobile app continuously collects hundreds of excellent reviews on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, praising its rich set of features, ease of use, reliability, and constant evolution.

We are therefore very happy to announce that EPFL has decided to renew its trust in PocketCampus for four more years, guaranteeing a top-notch mobile platform to its community for the coming years.

A few numbers on the usage of PocketCampus at EPFL:

  • More than 10'000 active users, half of which use the app daily
  • More than 5'000 students use it to access their course documents daily
  • About 2'500 documents are printed via the app every day, representing 90% of the prints done by students
